Bloom Beyond the Habit | Thumb Sucking & Pacifier Transition Program

Helping children gently break oral habits while supporting healthy growth and development.

Many children naturally outgrow thumb sucking or pacifier use during the toddler years. However, when these habits continue beyond approximately age four, they may begin to influence the way the mouth, teeth, jaws, and facial muscles develop.

Together Bloom offers a compassionate, evidence-informed 4-week Thumb Sucking & Pacifier Transition Program, based on the work of Diana Davidson, designed to help children successfully and confidently leave these habits behind—without shame, punishment, or power struggles.

Rather than focusing only on stopping the habit, this program helps families understand why the habit continues and provides children with the support, motivation, and strategies they need to be successful.

Why Does It Matter?

Prolonged thumb sucking and pacifier use may contribute to changes in oral and facial development, including:

  • Narrow or high-arched palate

  • Dental changes such as an open bite or crossbite

  • Altered tongue resting posture

  • Mouth breathing patterns

  • Changes in lip strength and facial muscle balance

  • Speech sound differences in some children

Over time, these changes can increase the likelihood of developing an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder (OMD)—a condition involving the muscles and functional patterns of the face and mouth that may affect breathing, chewing, swallowing, speech, sleep, and overall oral development.

Addressing these habits early gives the developing mouth the greatest opportunity to grow in a healthy direction.

What Is Included?

Every program begins with a caregiver interview where we'll discuss:

  • Your child's history

  • Current thumb sucking or pacifier habits

  • Daily routines and triggers

  • Sleep habits

  • Motivation and readiness

  • Developmental factors that may influence success

This conversation allows us to personalize the program for your child and determine whether they are developmentally ready to begin.

Four Weeks of Guided Support

Throughout the program, families receive structured weekly support designed to:

  • Build your child's motivation

  • Increase awareness of the habit

  • Teach replacement strategies

  • Reduce emotional stress surrounding habit elimination

  • Celebrate progress through positive reinforcement

  • Support caregivers with practical coaching throughout the process

The approach is child-centered, encouraging confidence and independence rather than relying on fear, punishment, or rewards alone.

After the Program

Many children complete the program with the habit successfully eliminated.

For some children, however, thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use was only one piece of a larger picture.

If your child demonstrates additional signs of an Orofacial Myofunctional Disorder—including persistent mouth breathing, low tongue posture, tongue thrust, difficulty chewing, snoring, restless sleep, or facial muscle imbalance—they may benefit from a comprehensive Orofacial Myofunctional evaluation and therapy following the elimination of this habit.

When appropriate, families can seamlessly transition into Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, where we focus on establishing healthy breathing patterns, proper tongue resting posture, mature swallowing, lip seal, chewing skills, and optimal oral function.

Who Is This Program For?

This program is ideal for children who:

  • Are approximately 4 years of age or older

  • Continue to suck their thumb or fingers

  • Continue to use a pacifier beyond the toddler years

  • Are developmentally ready to participate

  • Have caregivers who are ready to support the process consistently over four weeks
